Time: Autumn 1746

Foreign Titles: Verrat aus Liebe German

Synopsis:
Patricia Veryan returns to Georgian England in this eagerly awaited fifth volume of her highly praised series of romantic adventures, The Golden Chronicles . In the autumn of 1746, Rosamond Albritton, who blames the Jacobites for the death of her beloved at the Battle of Culloden, is journeying home from a visit in Paris, while Bonnie Prince Charlie's supporters are desperately seeking the cypher that will lead them to the Jacobites' hidden treasure.
While on board the ship to England with her chaperone, Aunt Estelle, Rosamond takes a nasty spill and must rely on the services of Dr. Robert Victor, a man whose questionable skills as a physician are overshadowed by his fierce expression and haughty air. Rosamond's injury brings her into close contact with Victor, but it is only when he offers to escort the ladies home that her suspicions are aroused.
As soon as they arrive at Lennox Court, Rosamond confronts her learned and normally soft-spoken brother, the Reverend Charles Albritton, about their elusive companion. She soon discovers that her brother's mission is more complex than she had imagined, and that her own feelings for Dr. Victor have taken a rebellious turn.

Alternate Synopsis:
ENEMIES IN BATTLE, COULD THERE BE TRUCE IN LOVE ... ?
Exquisitely beautiful Rosamond Albritton, genteel though she was, found herself hating the Jacobite rebels whohad caused her fiance's death.
And for some reason, she immediately distrusted the handsome, haughty Dr. Robert Victor, who tended her injuries during a channel crossing. Why did his searching glances and probing hands fluster her so?
Rosamond's pristine world spun out of control as her heart succumbed to his inscrutable rogue. But as the world conspired against them, Rosamond and Robert were forced to fight for their honor and their lives before they could save their love.

Reviews:
"Once again, Ms. Veryan sweeps her readers off into grand adventure and romance, with a dramatic finale that will leave them breathless with excitement. Let us hope that the next book will finally tell the story of the mysterious Roland Fairleigh, an adventurer who simply refuses to be a villain." Rave Reviews
"Veryan is among the best writers of the genre, bringing humor as well as solid writing and character development to her books." Knoxville News-Sentinel
"Once again, Veryan uses her characters with ... captivating originality." Booklist

Quotes:
"I fear I annoyed her when I ripped up her night-dress." Mr. Fairleigh was engaged in swinging a gold-chased quizzing glass from the chain that hung about his neck, but at this he gave an audible gasp, the hand holding that elegant chain jerked convulsively, and he stared wide-eyed at the physician. Reddening, Victor added, "For bandages!"

Title Significance:
" ... He was cherishing an
enemy in disguise ... "
Joseph Priestley (1733-1804)

Trivia:
  • The place where the treasure is located, Cancrizans Priory, appears as the home of the hero, Camille Damon, in Veryan's Love's Duet.
  • If you would like to see the entire cypher, click here.
  • Roland Otton is back, but this time he goes by the name of Roland Fairleigh. As a man who could have been a friend of the hero if the circumstances were different, the interplay between MacTavish and Otton makes for some hilarious scenes: in specific, the scene where Otton's identity is discovered. In The Dedicated Villain, Roland says that he is not able to look at a woodshed in the same way ever again.
  • Thaddeus Briley makes a brief appearance in this novel as as supposed smuggler of alcohol.
